One important thing I’ve learned writing about health and fitness is how much the balance between diet and exercise shifts as you age.

When you’re young, you can pretty much eat whatever you want and still stay reasonably fit if you’re exercising a lot.

I know that was true of me.

I could gorge on whatever I wanted — pizza, pasta, sugary cappuccinos and slushees, alcohol — and never gain a pound.
