As the month has gone on, it appears that newer stories may in fact be closer to the old RPM, but the problem is if the engagement falls off a cliff as it tends to do relative to read time for older stories, that's an issue for long-term writers. I think it may be 1-2 months before we get the full picture of the new changes.
