Hey Chris - thanks for reading this one. To answer your question: no, I have no set section in mind when I'm doing that.
I also jump around lot when I'm writing and dump thoughts on the page as they occur to me with plans to get back to them later and/or put them in the right spot.
I also sort of have article structures embedded in my brain from being a journalist, so it's easy for me to just pop them in the right spots to make it all flow, if that makes sense.
So for example, one of my stories being developed might look like:
I've seen a lot of hamster toys at the pet store, but there's one I think every pet pop should have in his furry friend's cage.
I was listening to an interview with XXXXXx
"XXXXXX," he explained. "XXXXXX"
talk about when son's hamster started climbing his wheel instead of running in it
So let's get into my Top 5 hamster toy power ranking, and then I'd love to hear about the ones you prefer.
TOP 5 HAMSTER TOYS
etc. etc. etc.
It starts out looking like a mess but it all gets assembled as I run through my three microbursts
