I think the hard truth is your writing is worth what it's worth. If the audience isn't there then you're on the wrong platform.
I'm one of the best sportswriters there is, but nobody reads sportswriting on this platform - and I can't get mad at that! If I want to write about sports and get paid, I have to do that elsewhere.
I would look at whether or not the topics you're touching on have a sufficient audience here and weigh what's working and what isn't.
You mentioned you're a convicted felon which to me is an interesting topic that a lot of people find fascinating.
Are you comfortable sharing your own experiences? What did you learn from it? How has it made you a better person? Were you incarcerated? What did that feel like? What was your first night like? How did it affect your relationships, etc.? How hard is it to rebuild?
One of my best friends went to prison and he has 10x more interesting stories than I do and 10x more challenges than I do trying to rebuild, get work, etc. And he gained a lot of wisdom in the process.
I think that's the sort of thing that does better on Medium but not everyone feels comfortable opening up like that. Not everyone would feel as comfortable as I do talking about my problems with alcohol. It's a personal choice.
