The time someone created a fake identity to try and get me fired

One time, a guy disagreed so vehemently with one of my Twitter takes that he created a fake identity just to try and get me fired.

This was back in my journalism days. If you’ve ever been a working journalist, you know the thick skin you need to develop to deal with the nonsensical online hate that gets casually tossed your way every day.

It usually comes from people who would be far too cowardly to ever say anything to your face, but I digress.

The crazy thing is, I was a sports journalist.

This lunatic got so riled up over something mildly political that was tangentially related to a current sports story that he created a new email and sent a note to the Editor-In-Chief and Publisher saying I should be fired because I was mean to his son on Twitter (there was no son — it was the same guy in his late 20s I was arguing with).

Keep in mind here I did nothing other than disagree with whatever garbage this fellow was spewing.

Now, what the guy didn’t realize is that, before going into sports, I was an investigative reporter.

Within half an hour of seeing the note to my bosses, which the guy graciously cc’ed me on, I managed to dig up:

  • his real name
  • his address
  • his employer
  • his emails
  • a photo
